Parks departments, libraries, and museums run thousands of free events. Here's where to look.

The best places to find something to do today are usually the least flashy: your city's parks calendar, your public library, and your local news site's weekend roundup. Many of their events are free.

Start with the parks department. New York City Parks listed 5,414 upcoming events on its calendar as of October 21, including free playground activities for kids like organized sports, games, and fitness demos. The Chicago Park District lets you search events by park, community area, or ZIP code, and listed 338 that day. City tourism sites keep broader calendars. Choose Chicago notes the city's free summer events, like the Chicago Blues Festival, which it calls the largest free blues festival in the world. Discover Atlanta keeps a running calendar for today, this week, and this weekend, and Visit Houston's can be searched by category, date range, location, or keyword.

Public libraries are the most overlooked option. About 93 million people attended 4.6 million public library programs in 2023, according to the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and libraries offered 1.2 million more programs than the year before. The New York Public Library alone offers thousands of free programs a year across its 92 locations, from author talks to performances, and all of its teen programs are free.

Museums have free days, too. Bank of America cardholders get free general admission at participating museums across the country during the first full weekend of every month through its Museums on Us program. The next one is November 7 and 8. The Smithsonian's museums are always free, except Cooper Hewitt in New York.

National parks waive entrance fees on certain days. The next two are October 27 and Veterans Day, November 11, according to the National Park Service. Starting this year, free entrance on those days is for U.S. citizens and residents only.

Event apps fill in the rest. Eventbrite lists 4.7 million events in nearly 180 countries. Meetup is built around groups that meet in person around shared interests. Nextdoor says it reaches 110 million verified neighbors in 350,000 neighborhoods, with local events among its listings. AllEvents says more than 20 million people use it to find events each month.

Local newsrooms do some of the sorting for you. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, for example, publishes a weekly list of things to do and a monthly roundup of free things to do around Atlanta. Check your local TV station's and newspaper's sites for the same.

A few free events coming up in New York City: the Veterans Day Parade returns to Fifth Avenue on Wednesday, November 11, from about 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., rain or shine, and watching is free. The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree arrives November 7, and the lighting ceremony is Wednesday, December 2. In Chicago and Houston, the city calendars above are the place to look for holiday events as they're announced.
