The state average is $4.09. Even the cheapest metro in Georgia is over $4.
Regular gas in Georgia averaged $4.09 a gallon on Monday, according to the AAA. That's 8 cents more than a week ago, 27 cents more than a month ago, and $1.18 more than a year ago.
Filling a 15-gallon tank now costs about $61.35. A year ago, at $2.91 a gallon, the same fill-up was about $43.65, so drivers are paying roughly $17.70 more every time they fill up.
In metro Atlanta, regular averaged $4.07.
"Georgia drivers are continuing to feel the strain of higher fuel costs, with pump prices holding above $4 a gallon, taking a significant bite out of household budgets," said Montrae Waiters, a spokeswoman for AAA.
Georgia is still below the national average, which was $4.47, 38 cents higher.
The jump traces back to crude oil. Crude topped $100 a barrel earlier this month after fighting between the U.S. and Iran escalated around the Strait of Hormuz, NPR reported. "Ever since the hostilities have resumed, that spigot has been tightened," said Aaron Brady of S&P Global Energy. AAA said crude has averaged about $100 a barrel.
Florida is paying more. The state averaged $4.30 on Sunday, 15 cents more than a week ago and $1.16 more than a year ago. On Friday it reached $4.33, the highest daily average there since May, AAA said.
"Rising oil prices contributed to the latest jump at the pump. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East have created uncertainty about global oil supplies," said Mark Jenkins, an AAA spokesperson.
Inside Georgia, the highest prices were in Savannah at $4.17, Augusta-Aiken at $4.13, and Macon at $4.12. The lowest were in Valdosta at $4.01, Warner Robins at $4.03, and Athens at $4.05.
Valdosta, the cheapest metro in the state, is still a penny over $4.
