Banks and post offices close. UPS delivers, and the stock market stays open. Here's the rest.
Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, this year. It's a federal holiday, so federal offices, post offices, and most banks close, but plenty stays open. Here's what to expect.
| Service | Veterans Day |
|---|---|
| Federal offices | Closed |
| Post offices and regular mail | Closed, no regular delivery expected |
| UPS | Pickup and delivery available |
| FedEx | Modified service, FedEx Office open |
| Banks | Most branches closed; ATMs and online banking work |
| Stock market | Open |
| Bond market | Closed, under industry recommendation |
| Stores and restaurants | Varies by business |
Mail: The Postal Service lists Veterans Day among its 2026 holidays. On Veterans Day 2024, post offices were closed for retail transactions and there were no residential or business deliveries, while Priority Mail Express was still delivered, the Postal Service said. It hadn't posted its 2026 notice as of October 21.
Packages: UPS says pickup and delivery services are available on November 11, 2026, and The UPS Store locations are open. UPS Ground Saver and UPS Mail Innovations will take an extra business day because of the Postal Service holiday. FedEx lists modified service that day, with early on-call and drop box pickups in some areas, and FedEx Office open.
Banks: The Federal Reserve observes Veterans Day, and many banks follow its schedule. Chase says its U.S. offices are generally closed that day and it won't process transactions when Federal Reserve banks are closed. ATMs, online banking, and mobile banking generally keep working. If a payment or deposit is due, plan for it to move a day.
Markets: The New York Stock Exchange doesn't list Veterans Day among its 2026 holidays, so stocks trade normally. The bond market is a different story. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association recommends a close for Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2026.
State and local government: It depends on where you live. In Georgia, the Capitol and state agencies are closed on Veterans Day, and Oregon's state agencies, including the DMV, close, too. New York City public schools are closed. Check your school district's calendar, since schedules vary.
Trash pickup: It varies by city. New York City's sanitation department lists Veterans Day as a holiday it observes. Last year, there was no trash, composting, or recycling collection on the holiday. Check your city's sanitation or public works page for the 2026 schedule.
Stores and restaurants: Closures depend on the individual business, NBC New York noted last year, so check with a store before you go.
Why November 11? The fighting in World War I stopped when an armistice took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. A 1954 law made November 11 a day to honor American veterans of all wars. Congress then moved it to a Monday in October, and the first of those, on October 25, 1971, was observed with much confusion, the VA says. A 1975 law returned the holiday to November 11, beginning in 1978, no matter what day of the week it falls on.
If you want to mark the day, New York City's Veterans Day Parade is on Fifth Avenue, and national parks waive entrance fees for U.S. citizens and residents. Our guide to finding parade routes and road closures can help you plan around it.
